Dos and Don’ts When Using a Baby Swing

Nowadays, a baby swing has become an essential baby furniture that parents include in their list of things to buy. Not only can it work wonders in calming a fussy infant, it also provides temporary reprieve for parents and caregivers. Because it relieves them from having to cuddle baby all the time just to keep him quiet and satisfied, it permits them to find some time to relax and to do other chores. However, as a precaution in using any infant accessory, it is still considered dangerous to leave an infant unattended in an infant swing. Therefore, there are certain limitations on what you should and should not do when placing your baby on a swing.

Dos

Make sure that baby is comfortable. Check the mattress or padding for any hard sides or portions and for any crawling insect that may have landed on it.

Buckle baby up safely. Always strap him completely. As most infant swings have 5-point harnesses, make sure every strap is secured.

Place a mosquito net over the swing. Some models come with nets as an added accessory. If your unit doesn’t have this, you can get one of these separately in baby accessories stores. You will need this to keep baby from mosquito bites to avoid malaria or dengue.

Don’ts

You should never leave your baby by himself for a long period. When leaving baby for a long bath or shower, make sure you assign someone to watch over him. Getting coffee or something very quickly may be fine but be sure not to leave him by himself for more than 5 minutes.

Setting the speed of motion on the highest level for a long period of time is also not advisable. You may think that it may instantly calm or soothe a crying baby but she might just get dizzy after a while. Shaking baby too hard whether in a swing or manually may cause serious head injuries and trauma which can lead to long term brain damage.

A baby swing may really be very handy when taking care of babies. But careful handling and use should also be taken to ensure that baby is safe and away from harm.

Four Baby Accessories That Saved Our Sanity The First Year Of Parenthood

Ahhh, the first year of parenthood. All the new experiences, joys, frustrations and overall insanity that comes along with the most precious gift you will ever be given. As first time parents we not only get to experience these emotions, but also the confusion and exhilaration of finding out what accessories actually are worth their weight in gold to preserve your sanity during this first year.

First let me start off with some of my background. I am the proud mother of an adorable 11 month old girl who found herself immersed in a sea of baby accessories. Please also understand that my background in baby stuff is very limited. You probably recognize me. I was the women who didn’t have children while all of her friends did. The one who would smile noncommittally while being shown the latest batch of baby pictures and make the appropriate cooing noises all the while thinking about what to make for dinner that night or if the dry cleaning was ready to pick up. I was the one who stopped you in the baby store with a glazed look in my eye pointing at your child and asking you how old they are and what size to buy for a two year old. Yes, I am the one who always showed up last for the baby shower, didn’t win any of the prizes, gave the gift certificate and made the excuse to leave early. “Sorry, have to take the cat into the vet to get de-wormed”. Yes, I was that lady.” But here I am now, an expert in my own mind about what really works during the first year. So if you are looking for a chuckle and some sound advice on what to get, please read on.

The combination stroller/car seat. Not only does this item grow with your child which makes it financially wonderful, it is great to have when your kid has fallen asleep in the car and you would rather have a bikini wax than wake her up. Simply lift the seat carrier out of the car and transfer it to the crib. She sleeps on, you get a few minutes to put away the groceries before they melt.

The baby swing: This contraption was the second most valuable piece in our baby inventory. It was a papasan type chair that swung two ways. For the first six months of her life, our daughter slept in it. And I mean always. For naps, at night, when she was cranky and when we moved, we took this huge piece of furniture with us in the car so that she would have a place to sleep on the drive. Only when she got too big for the safety requirements did we transition her to the crib.

The inflatable tub. When our daughter was about 7 months old, she discovered that by throwing herself forward in her baby tub, it would flip up and she along with the water would go flying across the tub. Great fun for her, heart attack for Mom. Solution, the inflatable tub. It sits securely in the tub and she thinks she is in a swimming pool. It is non-tippable and drains easy. Also, by putting bath toys in there, baby is distracted enough, most of the time, to try and not climb out of the tub.

And finally, Sweat pants. Yes, I know, there are all sorts of cute clothing out there for kids. Lots of bows and ruffles and skirts that make her look oh so cute. But for the reality of the situation, pants are by far my favorites. They keep your baby warm throughout the year, are easier to manage when putting your child in the car seat or bouncer, you don’t have to worry about the skirt riding up and showing off the diaper and when your bundle of joy discovers crawling, it will save their little knees. Nothing is more pathetic then seeing little rug burns on your 9 month olds knees.

Awesome Organic Baby Products for New Mums

Natural nurturing

As kids, we don’t think at all about the ‘chemicals’ that might be in the things we put in our mouths or play with. As teenagers, we certainly do care about the chemicals we put in our body… and often put them in purposefully, in the interests of experimentation! As adults we are usually quite indifferent… until our babies start arriving. These tiny little bundles are inescapably helpless, miraculously soft and mightily vulnerable, and many Mums turn to organic solutions to help assure them that they aren’t doing any harm to their children. If you know a natural nurturer, today we check out some of the best organic baby products and baby accessories to be found.

1. Organic baby products for the bath

Bath time is one of those times when you can’t really do without the help of various substances to get your bub clean. For natural-style Mums, organic baby products for the bath are a must.

2. Organic baby clothing

Mums can not only feel good about their contribution to the environment with organic fabric baby clothing, but can also stress less about itchiness that causes unfathomable crying, skin rashes and sensitization to various substances.

3. Cloth nappies

Buy organic cotton terry towelling nappies as a new-Mum baby product gift, and she’ll be saving money as well as protecting her baby’s skin and the environment.

4. Organic skincare for Mum

Becoming a mother can be so rewarding… but also terrifying, as you completely lose your sense of self, sense of beauty and ways of relating to other adults. Beauty products for Mums are a fantastic gift after the birth – organic is best, because bubs will be in close contact with Mum’s skin for substantial portions of the day while either breast or bottle feeding.

5. Organic household cleaners

I personally hate breathing in Spray and Wipe fumes… and you can imagine what they do to a tiny baby’s not-yet-developed lungs. There are plenty of organic cleaning products options available nowadays, and these baby accessories come in far more delicious flavours than ‘Commercial Lemon’!

6. Organic wipes

With a new baby, Mums spend quite a few of the day’s hours wiping various ‘things’ up! Baby wipes can’t help leaving a residue on the skin, so many Mums prefer them to be organic.

7. Organic teething toys

With the current kerfuffle over bisphenol-A, most Mums agree that organic baby accessories for teething are best. You can get all-natural rubber or leather teething baby products.

8. Organic shopping bags

Granted, you won’t be shopping for nightclub fashions, new jewellery or makeup… but you may as well look great (and be organic!) while popping out for rice cereal and juice! You’ll find Envirosax organic shopping bags designed for Mums at many good organic baby products shops… and the range of designs is irresistible.
