Four Baby Accessories That Saved Our Sanity The First Year Of Parenthood

Ahhh, the first year of parenthood. All the new experiences, joys, frustrations and overall insanity that comes along with the most precious gift you will ever be given. As first time parents we not only get to experience these emotions, but also the confusion and exhilaration of finding out what accessories actually are worth their weight in gold to preserve your sanity during this first year.

First let me start off with some of my background. I am the proud mother of an adorable 11 month old girl who found herself immersed in a sea of baby accessories. Please also understand that my background in baby stuff is very limited. You probably recognize me. I was the women who didn’t have children while all of her friends did. The one who would smile noncommittally while being shown the latest batch of baby pictures and make the appropriate cooing noises all the while thinking about what to make for dinner that night or if the dry cleaning was ready to pick up. I was the one who stopped you in the baby store with a glazed look in my eye pointing at your child and asking you how old they are and what size to buy for a two year old. Yes, I am the one who always showed up last for the baby shower, didn’t win any of the prizes, gave the gift certificate and made the excuse to leave early. “Sorry, have to take the cat into the vet to get de-wormed”. Yes, I was that lady.” But here I am now, an expert in my own mind about what really works during the first year. So if you are looking for a chuckle and some sound advice on what to get, please read on.

The combination stroller/car seat. Not only does this item grow with your child which makes it financially wonderful, it is great to have when your kid has fallen asleep in the car and you would rather have a bikini wax than wake her up. Simply lift the seat carrier out of the car and transfer it to the crib. She sleeps on, you get a few minutes to put away the groceries before they melt.

The baby swing: This contraption was the second most valuable piece in our baby inventory. It was a papasan type chair that swung two ways. For the first six months of her life, our daughter slept in it. And I mean always. For naps, at night, when she was cranky and when we moved, we took this huge piece of furniture with us in the car so that she would have a place to sleep on the drive. Only when she got too big for the safety requirements did we transition her to the crib.

The inflatable tub. When our daughter was about 7 months old, she discovered that by throwing herself forward in her baby tub, it would flip up and she along with the water would go flying across the tub. Great fun for her, heart attack for Mom. Solution, the inflatable tub. It sits securely in the tub and she thinks she is in a swimming pool. It is non-tippable and drains easy. Also, by putting bath toys in there, baby is distracted enough, most of the time, to try and not climb out of the tub.

And finally, Sweat pants. Yes, I know, there are all sorts of cute clothing out there for kids. Lots of bows and ruffles and skirts that make her look oh so cute. But for the reality of the situation, pants are by far my favorites. They keep your baby warm throughout the year, are easier to manage when putting your child in the car seat or bouncer, you don’t have to worry about the skirt riding up and showing off the diaper and when your bundle of joy discovers crawling, it will save their little knees. Nothing is more pathetic then seeing little rug burns on your 9 month olds knees.

Using an Elmo Baby Blanket

Elmo is the loveable Muppet from the children’s television series, Sesame Street. Elmo’s furry red complexion and cute personality makes him a favorite among youngsters and their parents too. One of the most useful baby accessories to nurture and care for your child is a baby blanket, so why not add a fashionable and practical accessory to your supplies for your baby.

The Elmo blanket is a fantastic bedding accessory that not only offers warmth and comfort while sleeping, but also has many other practical uses in and away from the home.

The Elmo blanket is the perfect accessory to have to care for your baby throughout your day to day routine and activities. A soft Elmo blanket can also be used as a great diaper changing mat. By having a baby changing mat, you can safely protect and keep your little one in place while changing their diaper.

An Elmo blanket is also not only a stylish and fashionable accessory, but it is also practical and portable. A blanket that is lightweight and portable is extremely handy for travelling for place to place. Simply store it in your baby bag and it is always there whenever the occasion arises that you may need it.

A baby blanket is a very handy accessory and has many uses, so be sure to purchase one that is machine washable and durable that will last. There are many styles and designs available of Elmo and Sesame Street baby blankets, so select one that personifies you and your child.

Help Clean Our Environment by Using Eco-Friendly Baby Products and Organic Baby Accessories

By using eco-friendly baby products and organic baby accessories, you are taking a positive step towards keeping our environment clean. Also, using earth-friendly baby products is very important for your baby’s health. In light of global warming, there needs to be drastic measures taken worldwide to curb the effects of this phenomenon.

Earth changes such as melting polar ice caps, climate changes, and many other concerns that we face, affects each and every one of us on this planet. Every bit of effort is vitally important in saving our world and our children’s future. Let us take a look at some great ways to help both your baby and mother earth.

Natural Organic and biodegradable diapers

Millions of diapers, both disposable and cloth, continue to fill up landfills every year. Yet, many of these diapers are made from plastic, chlorinated materials and other undesirable compounds. The plastic is not biodegradable and chlorinated materials pose a serious threat to our waters. Other undesirable compounds can also cause health problems to children.

By using 100% natural, organic, non-chlorinated cloth diapers, you will be helping both your child and the environment. You can find them made from a variety of fabric such as cotton, wool, and hemp suitable for baby and the earth. Use natural cloth wipes instead of disposable wipes. Disposable wipes contain chemical ingredients that can be harmful to babies sensitive skin. These wipes may also contain fibers that are also not biodegradable.

Convenience can be a huge factor for busy lifestyles of families with young children wearing diapers. So, it is to no amazement that millions of disposable diapers are sold every year. These types of diapers do not meet the criteria of concern for baby and the planet. Though, there seems to be a company out of Oregon (gdiapers.com) that has met all the requirements for safe, biodegradable and convenience through a flushable product. Could this be true?

Baby bottles

The presence of Bisphenol-A (BPA) in plastic bottles is a very serious concern especially in baby bottles. Tests have shown that BPA leachesthrough the repeated use of bottles containing the chemical. BPA is known to cause health problems in animals and considered to be harmful to humans and the environment. Some plastic bottles leach can leach adipates and phthalates that are linked to reproductive problems and liver cancers in mice.

Look into using different bottles such as glass or #5 plastic bottles. Plastic bottles made of #5 are the most recyclable and have not yet been found to leach BPA. To prevent the presence of bacteria and injury you will want to periodically examine the bottles for scratches, chips and cracks. A safe choice for nipples would be silicone. Make sure they meet the highest standard. Also, look into aluminum and stainless steel water bottles which can also be recycled after repeated use.

Laundry Soap

When it comes to washing baby clothing and diapers, use laundry soap that is environmentally responsible. These soaps are 100% natural, plant-based and biodegradable. They are non-toxic, chlorine free, enzyme free, GM free, dye-free, hypo-allergenic and petroleum free. Clearly, they are the safest for your baby.

Natural organic clothing

Purchase baby clothes made from 100% certified organic cotton or 100% organic wool. They both are pesticide and chemical-free and are not treated with toxic dyes and formaldehyde before the finishing of the garment, all of which can contaminate our land, air and water. By dressing your baby in organic clothing, they will not be exposed to these dangerous agents and at the same time you will helping to support organic farming

Due diligence

There are many more baby products and baby accessories that are natural, organic and safe for your child. Keep in mind, due diligence is of the upmost importance in your search of these wonderful products. Not all products are 100% certified organic and they may contain the harmful elements to both your baby and the environment. May your journey be a contribution to helping our planet.
