Four Baby Accessories That Saved Our Sanity The First Year Of Parenthood

Ahhh, the first year of parenthood. All the new experiences, joys, frustrations and overall insanity that comes along with the most precious gift you will ever be given. As first time parents we not only get to experience these emotions, but also the confusion and exhilaration of finding out what accessories actually are worth their weight in gold to preserve your sanity during this first year.

First let me start off with some of my background. I am the proud mother of an adorable 11 month old girl who found herself immersed in a sea of baby accessories. Please also understand that my background in baby stuff is very limited. You probably recognize me. I was the women who didn’t have children while all of her friends did. The one who would smile noncommittally while being shown the latest batch of baby pictures and make the appropriate cooing noises all the while thinking about what to make for dinner that night or if the dry cleaning was ready to pick up. I was the one who stopped you in the baby store with a glazed look in my eye pointing at your child and asking you how old they are and what size to buy for a two year old. Yes, I am the one who always showed up last for the baby shower, didn’t win any of the prizes, gave the gift certificate and made the excuse to leave early. “Sorry, have to take the cat into the vet to get de-wormed”. Yes, I was that lady.” But here I am now, an expert in my own mind about what really works during the first year. So if you are looking for a chuckle and some sound advice on what to get, please read on.

The combination stroller/car seat. Not only does this item grow with your child which makes it financially wonderful, it is great to have when your kid has fallen asleep in the car and you would rather have a bikini wax than wake her up. Simply lift the seat carrier out of the car and transfer it to the crib. She sleeps on, you get a few minutes to put away the groceries before they melt.

The baby swing: This contraption was the second most valuable piece in our baby inventory. It was a papasan type chair that swung two ways. For the first six months of her life, our daughter slept in it. And I mean always. For naps, at night, when she was cranky and when we moved, we took this huge piece of furniture with us in the car so that she would have a place to sleep on the drive. Only when she got too big for the safety requirements did we transition her to the crib.

The inflatable tub. When our daughter was about 7 months old, she discovered that by throwing herself forward in her baby tub, it would flip up and she along with the water would go flying across the tub. Great fun for her, heart attack for Mom. Solution, the inflatable tub. It sits securely in the tub and she thinks she is in a swimming pool. It is non-tippable and drains easy. Also, by putting bath toys in there, baby is distracted enough, most of the time, to try and not climb out of the tub.

And finally, Sweat pants. Yes, I know, there are all sorts of cute clothing out there for kids. Lots of bows and ruffles and skirts that make her look oh so cute. But for the reality of the situation, pants are by far my favorites. They keep your baby warm throughout the year, are easier to manage when putting your child in the car seat or bouncer, you don’t have to worry about the skirt riding up and showing off the diaper and when your bundle of joy discovers crawling, it will save their little knees. Nothing is more pathetic then seeing little rug burns on your 9 month olds knees.

Buying Baby Accessories

For a parent expecting their first child, looking at the list of preparations is daunting. Trying to figure out what is necessary and what can wait, which accessories are better for the baby- the list goes on. There is no doubt, however, that some things certainly are needed.

A car seat, of course, is undeniably a must, as well as a good supply of diapers. Baby bottles are often preferred, as well as milk formula, for those mothers who, for one reason or another, are unable to give their own milk, or even to give Dad extra time to spend with the little one. Clothes are another must-have, particularly items such as jumpers and pajamas. Extra-soft baby towels and rags, rather than the courser bath towels used by adults, are another desirable article. With these come specially formulated soaps and shampoos, expressly devised for the newborn’s sensitive skin. A baby bath is another thing that is helpful to acquire, while a crib is a definite must.

Some items are wonderful and fun luxuries to own, but not absolutely necessary to have in the beginning. These include toys, such as rattles and blocks. The newborn baby does not have the focus of mind and body to notice such things, at least at first. Later on, however, as baby becomes more mobile and aware of the world around him, these distractions become a must for any parent intending to keep their child out of anything within reach. A baby swing is good for calming the baby and for a nap, as is a playpen. Certain things, though not immediately called for, become essentials later on down the road. A highchair or walker would be some good examples of these.

These are only a few examples of the wide array of utensils available to the proud parents of the newborn. Indeed, baby accessories are a world of its own, confidently occupying its own niche in the market.

Stylish Boutique Baby Clothes, Baby Gifts and Accessories

The birth of a baby is a truly joyous event and baby boutique clothes ensure that the new arrival is attractively and fashionable clothed as befitting the special occasion. Whether you are a first-time parent or an experienced hand, the joy of decorating your home to welcome the new arrival never pales even if the ritual is repeated many times.

Decorating the Baby’s Room

One of the many delights of parenthood is the pleasure of designing a fairytale nursery for your little prince or princess. The d├ęcor and accessories should not only be attractive and hygienic, but also comfortable and safe for the baby. Happily, in addition to clothes, baby boutiques often stock related products such as nursery furniture and accessories. Delicate, non-toxic, hand-painted drawer knobs, attractive canvas board wall hangings and dainty cross crib accessories can be combined to create an elegant, restful and above all, a safe haven for your precious bundle.

Additionally, parents should compose a list of important contacts for emergencies. It should ideally include contact details of your family doctor, paediatrician and ob-gyn in addition to those of the local hospital and pharmacist. You can also include the phone numbers of a few close relatives and reliable neighbours. Make sure to keep this list in a visible and accessible location such as the nursery notice-board or the refrigerator door.

Stocking Up On Baby Supplies

The number of baby accessories and supplies necessary to cater to the newborn is truly astonishing and first-time parents are often overwhelmed by the scale and diversity of baby necessities.

Ensure that there are plenty of baby supplies in your home before the baby arrive in order to avoid unnecessary trips to the store during the first week. Stock up on diapers, baby wipes and powder with separate supplies for both the changing bag as well as the changing table. Additionally, keep a supply of bottles and formula handy along with feeding blankets, wash cloths and several changes of clothing.

Fortunately, these days there are a number of online infant or baby boutiques that allows expectant mothers to leisurely choose everything from feeding bottles to nursery furniture and even pretty fripperies like an oversized hair bow for the baby from the comfort of their own home.

Celebrating the Miracle with Baby Gifts

The arrival of a baby is a festive occasion not just for the new parents but for the extended family of relatives and friends. Finding the perfect baby gift for that newly arrived special someone can be a challenging task. In addition to adorably delicate baby clothes, baby boutiques also stock up on charming gift items that are both functional as well as attractive such as diaper bags, rompers and baby gift sets.

The birth of a child is a magical time for everyone involved. The new arrival will need a variety of furniture, clothing, toys and accessories to keep him safe and happy. Baby boutique clothes make the perfect gift for both the baby as well as the expectant parents.
